Labyrinth of Trains

Since Christmas day, our house has literally turned into a labyrinth of railways.  You just have to dodge the tracks in the early am and not be carrying a cup of hot tea.

Christmas was lovely and we had snow a few days later.  I am ready for the new year and have new ideas brewing for woodcuts and a special painting for a friend...  Happy Monday.

The Waiting

Just a little Andrew Wyeth to help us wait for Christmas.  My daughter keeps telling me it's the waiting that's so hard... and she's getting way to excited to wait anymore.  Happy almost Christmas Eve!!

Winter is Closing In...

I don't seem to have many words lately.  Would rather speak in pictures.
I've always loved this painting by Breughel.  It's the ultimate winter scene - braving the cold and setting off for a hunt.  Have a lovely Thursday...

Messing Around

Messing around... thinking of what to draw for a Christmas card this year.  Searching my Italian Renaissance art books,  I was thinking maybe an angel or two or perhaps a Madonna and Child.  But then, I got distracted by Mr. Sandro Bottecelli's self portrait, staring at me with his magnificent eyes.  He was begging to be drawn:)   His face probably won't make the card this year... but what a face.

Ok, back to the turkey day stuff.  Happy Thanksgiving!!!

ps  more drawings over at my flickr...

Are You Recording?

Woodcut on sheet music.

I was in an old school/ community art center this summer ( I used to take piano lessons there)  and heard this fabulous blues-rock guitar playing.  I followed the music and found this guy in a classroom playing away.  In haste, I tried to snap a few stolen photographs on my iphone when he looked over at the door.  I motioned to my phone as if to say, "Is this ok?"  He thought I was recording him playing... but assured him it was just a few shots I was after.  So, he invited me in...  asked a few more times if I had done an audio recording - because he felt he was making so many mistakes and did not want it remembered!  Too funny.  After explaining I'm an artist and also play guitar, etc. he was finally convinced I was harmless:)  We chatted for quite a while as I took a lot of photographs.  Turns out he teaches guitar there... I need to send him one of these!

Checkerboard

Revisiting some old photographs lately, here's a hand sewn quilt made of linen.   I added some woodblocks  printed on linen.  Now, if only it would finish itself:)

The Wheat Field

Here's a woodcut of a little girl walking in tall wheat... out on the Palouse.  I printed it on very old violin sheet music.  A good harvest/autumn kind of feel to it, I think.

It is 'birthday season' in our family.  Lots of cakes to bake and long walks to take.  The etsy shop got updated with many new prints - which has been a long time coming:)  MOre photographs over at my Flickr if you're in the mood.  Have a great Wednesday...

Autumn Equinox is Coming...

Woodcut by Lucian Pisarro.

Autumn is creeping in faster than I realize... and it's almost the equinox.  Darkness falling earlier and earlier.  Cool morning walks get my brain churning with ideas for art.  Have two new pieces of wood prepared to carve, stay tuned!  I'll share them soon.  Happy weekend:)

PS
My work is now showing at the Bozzi Gallery at River Park Square.  They have very limited hours now.  Also, I have some woodblocks at the Mercedes Benz dealership in Liberty Lake, WA.

Joan Brown

Night Before Alcatraz Swim  by Joan Brown.

I love her self portraits... they always tell a story within a story (and more).  I'm working on a selfie now... she's great inspiration.

New One

Acrylic on wood... this one just came out with the rain and a few good nights of sleep.  School has started!  It seems to be turning into fall so quickly... my favorite season of the year.

Strata

Just a quick hello from inside the strata of my mind...  New painting on ungessoed wood.  Happy Labor Day Weekend:)

Another pattern doodle... seems like there should be words inside those openings.
Here is a very indulgent project I'm  doing for no other reason than pleasure!  It's the once a year wool, hand sewing project I seem to do when I need comforting.

PS-  Our naughtiest Welsh Corgi, Mr. Knightley has been gravely ill since Sunday and has been in the animal hospital since then.  But, he may be well enough to come home this evening.  Plus, we may finally have a diagnosis of what's been ailing him today after plenty of tests.  Sickly dogs are quite expensive!!!  Thanks for the doggie prayers and keep them coming if you can spare a moment or two :)

Summer Singing

A sort of newish woodblock print... hand painted.  The summer is sweltering by now.  91 degrees this afternoon as my son and I had a bike ride.  I am making books at the moment and will share some here in the coming month.

Our dog (the baby of the family) is now very sick... he's at the pet emergency hospital for the evening.  Here's hoping he survives another crisis.  The dog is the biggest problem child I have ever known.  Mostly worried about our daughter who has never lost a pet and is very attached.  Doggie prayers welcome here!!!

Open Book....

 My amazing daughter
Mermaid meets a tree with seedlings
Self from the past

A tiny peek into my sketchbook... I've been living in ink this summer.  Immensely enjoying drawing with the dipper pen into a bottle of ink and just letting what happens... happen.  I don't really share this with anyone in my 'real life' so, there you go:)

Hope you all are savoring every little last minute of summer madness and sultriness.  I am trying to squeeze every tiny, last drop out if it.  Back to school looms, for better or not.  Even though I'm a grown up, I still can't make up my mind what may be better... endless summer or the excitement of the new (school year).  Hmmmmnn.

Dispatch from My Summer Mindset...

Hello!  It has been a long pause between posts but... thought I'd share a few paintings.  This one is acrylic on canvas... about 28x40".  Unfinished feather and tree mandalas of sorts.  More to come...  These will likely be in a show I'm having in December in Liberty Lake, WA.  It's great to have the luxury of several months to paint and ponder for an upcoming exhibit.  Hope you are having a lovely summer!

PS

I am posting on Flickr quite often these days if you'd like to meet up with me there... click the link first link at upper right hand corner :)

A Woven Friday...

Me and the dog at home, listening to records and figuring out my daughter's 'kid loom' she got for Christmas.  (I secretly wanted one too...).

A perfect way to spend a little quiet time while the kids are sleeping in.  It's another 'teacher day' and it's raining again.  Board games and popcorn, perhaps???

Happy weekend:)

Painted Bench

Just today I finished this tall stool/bench as a commission.  So happy with the way it turned out.... Maybe I missed my calling as a furniture painter:). Inspired by African motifs.
